Tour of Sounio
The tour of Sounio starts from Athens by van or min van towards the cape of Sounio and the ancient temple of Poseidon. Sounio is on the southern edge of the Attica region. It is located around 1 hour and 15 minutes far from the center of Athens. We follow a beautiful road trip close to the coast. When we reach Sounio you will meet this charming site with clear waters, sandy beaches and rocky cliffs.
The whole area declared a national park due to its position and cultural value. The mythology says that Aegeus, king of Athens, died felling of the cliff in Sounio and that’s how he gave the name to Aegean sea. In the Greek antiquity in the area they were celebrating a festival every 5 years. The place was a strong fortress. Some parts of the walls are standing until today.
Visiting the Temple of Poseidon
On the cape is located the famous temple of Poseidon. It was built in 444 – 440 BC. Some findings of the temple are in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Due to Poseidon, god of sea, it was an important temple especially for the mariners and also whole cities. The temple had 34 Doric columns, 15 of them stand today, of white marble. In the center of the temple there was a colossal statue of Poseidon.
At the end of our tour we gaze the beautiful sunset in the Aegean Sea through the ruins of the temple.

Tour Reviews
Around Athens: Cap Sounio, Vouliamegli Lake etc…
We (a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 children 9y 13y) had a nice day, around Athens, in a confortable minivan. We spent a fabulous day with Christo, visiting Poseido temple, but also having fun on beach, lake, with great advice. We highly recommend his tour.
What a welcome
Chris was organised by our accommodation to pick us up from the airport. The trip into Athens was really enjoyable with a fascinating rundown on Athens and Greece in general.
We enjoyed his company so much we booked him to take us back to the airport via the various sites and the temple of Poseidon.
Charming and interesting. You cannot fail to enjoy his company so go on and book with Chris!
We went with Christos and Michael for our Cape Sounio and Lake Vouliagmeni Tour from Athens and it is a highly recommended experience. Being able to stop at attractions on the way as we pleased was fabulous for our family, with us even being able to decide at the last moment if we should swim somewhere or not. There were a few small stops on the way that you would never get to see on the standard bus service or without local knowledge. The van was comfortable, they even supplied water. All the prior arrangements were easy – we were able to be picked up from one location then dropped back to our apartment, which helped us make the most of our day. All this for a very affordable price. All the options for private tours in Greece can be overwhelming, but I would say it is definitely worth contacting Christos to discuss whatever you need.

Wonderful Sounio Tour!
Christos was wonderful. He picked us up right on time, took us to a couple very interesting locations between Athens and Sounio and gave us a very informative tour of the area and the temple of Poseidon. The van was very spacious and comfortable and had bottles of water for us. If we return to Athens, we would definitely contact Christos to go to other locations. Also, the price is great compared to other similar tours.
Best tour around Athens!
With Athens Van Tours we visited Delphi, Mycenae and Sounio and we enjoyed every moment! I recommend every single tour. Booking online on their website it is easy and If you haven’t booked a hotel they have nice apartments to stay. They provided us one near Acropolis of Athens. Next time I wish to visit Tinos as well!

I have been visiting Athens for many years but until now have never visited Cape Sounio.
I booked a trip via AVT. My enquiry was quickly answered by e-mail and I booked my trip.
The driver arrived at my hotel and introduced himself as “Christos” he was punctual, very friendly as well as speaking good English.
His Mercedes van was clean and comfortable.
On the way to Sounio (about an hours drive from the centre of Athens) he was very communicative and gave a great history lesson – also pointing out sights of interest en route.
On arrival at the Temple of Poseidon he gave a great guided tour, explaining the history and mythology around two of the most import Greek god and Goddess namely Poseidon and Athina.
I had a fantastic trip that was conducted at my pace, not rushed. Nothing was to much trouble for Christos.
My only regrets were not having enough time to visit Delphi with him – however I will definitely book that trip with him when I next visit Athens.
With so many crooks in Greece and rip off merchants it was a truly genuine surprise to meet someone decent and honest as Christos.
Have no hesitation in booking your trip with him and AVT.

Christos showed us a great time when we were in Sounio. The beaches were beautiful and we really enjoyed, seeing the town, drinking Greek coffee together, and visiting the Temple Poseidon. We only had a few hours before our flight home but Christos made it very special and got us to the airport in plenty of time.
Brigitte, Christian & Léa,
In December, we flew to Athens. Christos took us from the airport to our place. The following days he kind of made us discover Delphi, Ossios Lukas monastery, and Cape Sounio.
We have breakfast and lunch together so we ate real greek food.
We think we will be back soon in Athens and Christos will be our guide again.
Christos is a wonderful tour guide. We took this tour during our recent trip in November, and he was extremely friendly and accommodating for our group! We learned a lot during the tour and it was well worth it. I highly recommend!!!!
Christos is a friend, a person who you can trust. He allows us to enjoy the best of Athens, the most interesting points of interests according of our interests, highly recommendable. Also he knows the best restaurants to taste the best traditional and delicious greek dishes. He helps us with the transfer service service to and from our appartment. The tour to Cape Suonio was so great, living that experience was great, unforgetable, and highly recommendable for all. The tour also allow us to know the greek mediterranean coast, it’s the best of the best, and with him was amazing. Again, highly recommendable.
Thank you Susan have nice days to Delphi you are wonderful PEOPLE.
I really appreciate Christos! Expect a professional and courteous trip that is fun and informative. Christos is a wonderful person to visit with on the ride and leaves you feeling like you have a friend in Greece. The scenery is magnificent, though if you have a tendency toward motion sickness you might want to sit up front as it is a tad windy in spots.
Thank you Lea I hope to see you all again not in winder but the summer.
A very beautiful site. The road is not long and Christos livens up it with several explanations by showing the interesting places.
A very good trip !
